Tip: Dealing with Tantrums

Nick had the mother of all tantrums today, the result of overtiredness, Christmas cookies, and cloudy weather. After letting him do his best imitation of a howler monkey, I scooped him up, held him and began rocking him, saying the poem below.

Now it could be that my timing was right, catching him at the tail end of exhaustion, but he calmed down – as did I – and all was right in the world again. It was a nice reminder for both of us that the moment – no matter how difficult – will pass.

You just have to get through it.

Make up your own words to the poem as you go along. In their state, it’s not like you kiddos will call you on anything that doesn’t rhyme…or maybe they will and it’ll take their mind off of screaming.

We Love You
aka – For the love of GOD stop crying!

We love you when you’re happy
We love you when you’re sad
We love you when you’re giggly
We love you when you’re mad

We love you all the time, (child’s name)
It’s all the time we love you

We love you when you’re sick
We love you when you’re well
We love you when you’re quiet
We love you when you yell

We love you all the time, (child’s name)
It’s all the time we love you

We love you when you fix things
We love you when they break
We love you when you have accidents
We love the messes you make

We love you all the time, (child’s name)
It’s all the time we love you

We love you on your left side
We love you on your right
We love you in the morning
We love you in the night

We love you all the time, (child’s name)
It’s all the time we love you

Sung: (thank you, Beatles)

All you need is love
All you need is love
All you need is love, love
Love is all you need

(The coda from your inner voice: “Yeah, and a lot patience and self-restraint.)

Happy parenting!
