Book: All Falling Down

All Falling Down

by Gene Zion and Margaret Bloy Graham

What goes up
Must come down
Tricky concept
Till you’re grown
Talkin ‘bout learning things
That you don’t understand
Tell you parents read this book
And watch your mind expand

Note: Gene Zion and Margaret Bloy Graham of Harry the Dirty Dog fame wrote this charming Caldecott honor study of things that fall, including:

water, as in waterfall
leaves, as in see my backyard
snow, as in coming this Saturday
night, as in so freakin’ early now

The last 2 lines are keepers:

“Daddy lifts him up and tosses him in the air.
He doesn’t fall…Daddy catches him.”

It’s such a lovely image and concept that we use it to talk about different types of families (some families have a mommy; some families have a daddy) and segue right into Todd Parr’s The Family Book.

Bonus:

Things that fall in our house:

Nick’s ball – after being thrown from the 2nd floor
Nick’s dinner – en route to our dog Katchoo’s mouth
My face – usually around 8:30 PM
My energy level – definitely by 9:00PM

Things that rise in our house:

Nick’s ball – in an effort to hit the ceiling fan
Nick’s dinner – when trying to “flip pancakes”
My face – every single time I see him
My energy level – every single time I hug him
