Book: On Halloween Night

On Halloween Night
by Harriet Ziefert

First Nick was a pumpkin, courtesy his aunt
Then he was a chicken, but his happiness was scant
His mothers in their wisdom, scheduled shots for Halloween day
So when we see the pictures now, we only think “Oy Vey!”

This year gives the chance, to undo what we did
Courtesy our neighbors and their growing kid
Nick will be a chick again, this time one size bigger
But now we’ll skip the needles, ‘cause Halloween fun’s de rigueur

Note: Harriet Ziefert‘s build-as-you-go story is the perfect introduction to Halloween costumes. And while there’s always the option of laying down “real story“, it may be TMI for the younger folks (and maybe some older folks too!)

The text is very methodical – think “This is the house that Jack built” but substitute “Emily” and throw in some string and a witch hat.

It’s really quite sweet. Yup, candy corn sweet.
