Book: I Know An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly

I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly
by Colin and Jacqui Hawkins

There once was an unnamed old lady
Whom everyone found a bit shady
From flies to horses
Her meals were 8 courses!
When she sneezed, the results were…not pretty.

Note: I do love library book sales, especially when you can find books like this one for $.50. (I also picked up a 1962 Babar for the same price. Sweet!)

There are a million – slight exaggeration – versions of the fly-swallowing lady in kids’ books. We like this one for the interactivity. Old Lady swallows animal; we lift a flap to see said bewildered animal inside her stomach.

Of course, there’s never been any explanation as to why this poor old woman felt so compelled to swallow live animals – perhaps an ill-advised bid for life under the big top?

Nevertheless, there is a valuable takeaway from this story:

Never stand too close to an old lady with unfocussed eyes and wearing a yellow polka dot dress and a lift -up apron.

Who knows where you might end up!
