If I had the wings of this bird,
although some might find it absurd,
I’d assume
a golden plume
resides deep within
the Castle of My Skin
where it’s always been
at rest

Note:
We really can’t get enough of Leo Lionni in our house. We can read any of his books once and Nick is able to “read” it back to me by himself. And Lionni’s fables always carry a message – small “m” since he doesn’t use an ANVIL – that I know will stay with Nick long after he’s turned the last page.

There are a few authors that fall into the “kiddie-crack” category, meaning no matter what is going on – including major meltdowns – the moment you open the pages of their books, kids will be instantly drawn into the story.

Lionni is definitely one of them.

Stay golden, Pony Bird.

Bonus: I grew up singing this version of “If I Had the Wings of a Dove” (Track 3) – the inspiration for the song above.
