There was a young girl named Ruby
Who wished to attend university
Through hard work and patience
And her grandfather’s good sense
Her wish soon became reality
Note: Writer-Painter-Potter Shirin Yim Bridges comes from a family of creatives. Her sister, Natasha, is also a children’s author and her brother, Jason, is a filmmaker. She’s won the Ezra Jack Keats Book Award for Ruby’s Wish, which is a true story based on her grandmother’s experiences in China.
You can use this book to encourage your kiddo to write a story for their grandparent. Or consider helping them write their own “true” story (for example, what happened in school or what the did over the weekend.)
Bonus: You may run into Yim at The Common Cup … apparently, she’s a regular.
