“Frederick, oh Frederick, the winter draws nigh
We mice need supplies or else we will die!”

“Sorry, what’s that? Didn’t hear what you said
I was dreaming of colors and words instead.”

“What good will that do us?! We’ll freeze and what then?”

“We’ll stay warm in our hearts till it’s summer again.”

Note: Author Leo Lionni found success as a painter, economist, and art director before moving back to Italy where he wrote and designed over 40 children’s books, 4 of which were Caldecott Honor Winners.

Also check out Frederick’s Fables which has 16 of Lionni’s stories in one volume.
